Despite the vast literature on male courtship behaviour, little is known about the function and information content of female courtship behaviour. Female courtship behaviour may be important in many species, particularly where both sexes invest heavily in the offspring, and if such behaviours contain honest information regarding a females potential reproductive investment, they may be particularly important in male mate choice. Using observations of two female courtship behaviours (the rush and the twitch) from experimental pairings in the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni), I addressed the question of whether these courtship behaviours contained information on female reproductive output (clutch weight) and egg maturity (proximity to spawning), traits commonly associated with male mate choice. I especially focused on the importance of these courtship behaviours in relation to other female characters, such as size and condition, using multiple regression. I found that one of these behaviours, the rush, was strongly associated with fecundity, whereas size, condition and the twitch were not. Further, I found that the twitch behaviour was associated with how close to actual spawning a female was. The results suggest that female courtship behaviour may convey highly important information in a mate choice context. I discuss the adaptive value of honest information in female courtship behaviour in light of these results.Communicated by K. Lindström  相似文献

Two species of seed-eating true bugs, Neacoryphus bicrucis (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) and Margus obscurator (Heteroptera: Coreidae) co-occur on ragwort, Senecio tomentosus, in southern Georgia, USA. Males of both species sometimes engage in chases and protracted grappling with females that flee initial mountings. Sometimes genital coupling occurs while the wriggling female is restrained in the male's grasp. Chases, grappling, and mounting attempts are misdirected toward heterospecific females, heterospecific males, or conspecific males. In a laboratory study, confinement of mated N. bicrucis females with either conspecific or heterospecific males reduced fecundity by approximately one-half relative to mated females confined only with other females. Perhaps as a consequence of this, N. bicrucis females frequently leave areas of high host plant density, where they prefer to oviposit, when males are abundant. The abundance of each species is positively correlated with host plant density but the two species rarely occur together on the same plants. This may be an effect of heterospecific courtship which induces the flight of N. bicrucis more than the flight of M. obscurator. The laboratory results suggest that copulations following chases and grappling represent sexual harassment, not a mechanism of active female choice for a vigorous mate. As sexual harassment imposes high fitness costs that favor abandonment of host plants, it may, when misdirected, incidentally limit habitat use by ecologically similar species. Summary. The behavioural response of desert locust individuals to adult male volatiles had been investigated in a dynamic Y-T-olfactometer. Synthetic blends of a postulated adult male-produced aggregation pheromone with or without phenylacetonitrile were not attractive to fifth-instar nymphs, young or mature adults of both sexes. Instead phenylacetonitrile had a repellent effect, which was strongest in sexually mature males. The repellent effect of phenylacetonitrile was not modified by the other components of the adult male pheromone bouquet. Even at low concentrations tested the source of the pheromone was avoided. These results are in agreement with recent studies showing that this male specific pheromone is employed by mature gregarious males in sexual behaviour and acts as a courtship inhibiting pheromone. Low concentrations of phenylacetonitrile or the postulated adult male aggregation pheromone blend without phenylacetonitrile may signal the presence of swarm fellows and eventually initiate visually guided congregation behaviour in gregarious locusts. Whether this effect does significantly contribute to swarm cohesion needs further studies.  相似文献

Summary. The alkaloid profiles of the life history stages of the highly polyphagous arctiid Estigmene acrea were established. As larvae individuals had free choice between a plain diet (alkaloid-free) and a diet that was supplemented with Crotalaria-pumila powder with a known content and composition of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Idiosyncratic retronecine esters (insect PAs) accounted for approximately half of the PAs recovered from the larvae. These alkaloids were synthesized by the larvae through esterification of dietary supinidine yielding the estigmines, and esterification of retronecine yielding the creatonotines. The retronecine is derived from insect-mediated degradation of the sequestered pumilines (macrocyclic PAs of the monocrotaline type). With one exception, the PA profiles established for larvae were found almost unaltered in all life-stages as well as larval exuviae and pupal cocoons. The exception is the males, which in comparison to pupae and adult females, showed a significantly decreased quantity of the creatonotines and pumilines. These data support the idea that the creatonotines are direct precursors of the PA-derived male courtship pheromone, hydroxydanaidal. Crosses of PA-free males with PA-containing females and vice versa confirmed an efficient trans-mission of PAs from males to females and then from females to eggs. In single cases a male bestowed almost his total PA load to the female, and a female her total load to the eggs. The results are discussed with respect to pheromone formation, PA transmission between life-stages, and the defensive role of PAs against predators and parasitoids  相似文献

Summary. Hydroxydanaidal, the pyrrolizidine alkaloid-derived male corematal pheromone active in the close-range precopulatory interactions of the moth Utetheisa ornatrix, appears not to contribute to the chemical defense of this moth. The compound failed to manifest feeding deterrency as an additive to mealworms, in assays with a lycosid spider (Lycosa ceratiola). Moreover, contact with the male’s coremata, such as appears to occur inevitably in consequence of courtship in Utetheisa, does not in itself reduce the palatability of the female moth.  相似文献

Bright colours of male birds have often been shown to be the target of sexual selection through female choice, yet few studies have looked at the role of colour expressed after pairing on female motivation and behaviour. Here we analyse the role of an integumentary colour in the spectral range of 400–700 nm, the foot colour in male blue-footed boobies, Sula nebouxii, which is prominently displayed during pair courtship. Measurements early in the breeding season showed that foot colour of courting males is pale (high values of brightness) and has an aqua-blue chroma, and females in better body condition were mated to males with brighter feet. We carried out an experimental manipulation which modified the foot colour of males in courtship, making it closer to the foot colour of males in low nutritional state. We found that females paired to experimental males courted less and were less likely to copulate than females in the control group. Male behaviour was apparently unaffected by the manipulation; thus the change in female behaviour can be attributed exclusively to foot colour manipulation. These results strongly support the hypothesis of female preference for an integumentary colour and suggest that this dynamic trait is used as a male ornament after pairing.Communicated by J. Summary A crude cuticular extract from 3450 virgin 9–13 day old female fruit flies(Drosophila virilis), was subjected to chromatography accompanied by bioassay for sex pheromone activity. After three chromatographic steps, fractions containing active monoenes and dienes were obtained. Chemical analysis by infrared absorption, gas liquid chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of the active fraction indicated that active monoenes were comprised chiefly of (Z)-11-pentacosene (abbreviated (Z)-11-C25:1), (Z)-13-C27:1, (Z)-13- and (Z)-14-C29:1. Synthetic monoenes were made, and only (Z)-11-C25:1 elicited good courtship behaviour in maleD. virilis. Therefore it was concluded that (Z)-11-C25:1 was a major sex pheromone. A total of 16.2±1.32 µg of cuticular hydrocarbons was isolated from 10 day old females, including 5.9±0.56 µg of (Z)-11-C25:1. An additive effect was suggested from the higher observed courtship response when using a mixture of active dienes with the active monoene.  相似文献
